Resin composite stratification to achieve better esthetic results in the anterior sector has greatly developed during recent years. Numerous authors have proposed sophisticated stratification techniques which allow for the obtaining of excellent esthetic results, but which are often poorly adapted to use by the general practitioner. Rationalization of the clinical approaches and the terms utilized can greatly simplify these protocols. We will use the terms “opaque dentin” and “body dentin” and “enamel” to define the different masses of composites used. The various clinical steps are described and their objectives defined. However, we must always keep in mind that a good esthetic result depends as much on the selection of materials as on the respect for anatomic form and the quality of the finishing of the restorations.
